Goodbye & Good Luck Ginette

This is Ginette. She was my first contact in Canada and she is happily moving on to a different job. Good luck to her. Ginette was the HR Director for Nordia and we exchanged many emails before I come to Canada. She also met me at the airport even though my plane was late & it was 8pm. I remember her smiling face with a big sign saying Roe Gabriel. She also bought me a beanie, scarf & gloves so that I wouldnt get cold in the -22 degrees. Then we went out to dinner and I had my first experience with all French speaking folk in a restaurant. I didnt quite know what I ordered, and Ginette gave me my first French lesson.

She's a great lady & I wish her well because she deserves the best. The new job sounds exciting and is for a great company. It doesnt mean goodbye as I'll still visit her at her holiday cottage in the snow, but I do feel a sense of loss in that she was always someone there for me at Nordia. Times are a-changin' already. But change is a good healthy sign tha we are evolving.

Sorry for the deep & meaningful thoughts but living in a new country with many challenges to deal with, like no car, no vegemite & worse. . . no tim tams, I realise that change can be a very healthy thing. It's good to take risks sometimes because it often leads to more beautiful things!

You know it's Spring when. . .

You know it's Spring when. . .
. . . the dogs start sticking their head outside the car window.
. . . you can see the front door of your house in Quebec City.
. . .when you only need a level 3 type coat instead of a level 5.
. . .animals like birds are outside again.
. . .you can open the window in your apartment because it's not iced shut.
. . .it's over zero degrees during the day.
. . .snow tyres make this weird sound on the road like they're driving through water when the road is actually dry.

Yes Spring is here, officially started on March 21st but really started yesterday when it was 4 degrees outside & I saw my first puppy head out the window of a car. I walked to my local shopping centre WITHOUT a hat & gloves, and only a lev3l 3 coat!!! Amazing!

The photos are of Call Centres in Sherbrooke, then Quebec City with my friend Lynn Mayo who is the Operations Manager at Quebec, and this is Lynn's house in Quebec. The snow has melted considerably because you can actually see the front door. Lynn & I had fun while in Quebec, she's a real hoot! At Sherbrooke there is a river outside the Centre where the same man goes ice fishing. That's where you walk across the river of ice, cut out a hole & go fising in it. Apparently very dangerous except in Sherbrooke where the water is only waist deep anyway so if you did break through - you'd just be very cold.

Driving in Canada

So today was my first real driving experience in Canada.

I know I drove Warren's car but that was only 2 feet! This time I drove around the block a couple of times & drove down to my place from work. The car in this picture may become my new wheels!! It belongs to my friend Pierina from work. Pierina's also my gym buddy. We joined over a week ago & havent been since because I got sick & she got busy. Ah well -with a car I'm sure I'll go there all the time!!

It would be really nice to drive to the supermarket instead of monitoring the weight of my purchases so I can catch the bus home, or even get to the bank, or just go for a drive around the neighbourhood. There are some really nice houses around but I havent seen much of the place. I'm not sure it will get me to Ontario to Warren's house, but then I'm not really up to driving that far in a foreign country yet on the WRONG side of the road. (The Canadians tell me its the right side & I agree - its opposite the left but that's it!)

What's happening in Aus

So enough about me! The only interesting thing happening to me right now is happening in Australia. I became an Auntie for a second time!!! Shelley Belle Buckley was born on March 14th at 10:27pm weighing 8 pounds 3. As you can tell the proud parents are very happy. This is my brother Marty's & my sister-in-law Michele's first child. She's healthy, feeding well . . .and so is the baby! hehehe.

The other picture is the other half of my Auntiedom. It's Michele & Shelley Belle, with my sister Danielle & my adorable nephew Damian. This is my sister's first experience with Auntiehood & so far sho good. She sent me an email with about 5 "cute"s, 3 "adorable"s & a few "gorgeous"s. All the signs of a happy, gushing, Auntie. This is also my nephew's first experience with a baby cousin. He was equally in awe & his inquisitive mind was asking all the right questions!

I was so overcome that I left a terrible message on my brother's phone saying how happy I was amidst a flood of tears!!! Sorry Marty, I really am happy for you - I just wish I could be there to share your obvious joy! My love & joy are with you always - but now more than ever & I am so looking forward to visiting in June.

Canada's National Sport

Ok - I'm becoming more of a local now because I've been to a "Canadiens" (Montreal team) Hockey match against the New York Rangers.
It was a particularly emotional night as they inducted Geoffrion into the Hall of Fame & he had died that morning from cancer. He was part of the 1950s Hockey team & all his old. . .& I mean old team mates were there to send his banner up to the Hall of Fame. Also his whole family were there - grandkids etc, so it was very emotional. It was already planned & he had hoped to be there himself but died that very morning. If you're wondering there were many spirits around - just check out the photo of the Hall of Fame with the banners!

I got free tickets from Renaud & his wife. They are French (no - real French not French Canadian) and the French goalie had just moved to the Canadiens team. He did very well & the Canadiens won 1 - 0, so they were happy. They made me cheer every time the goalie saved a goal, but I was so moved by being at a real Hockey game I didn't object.
Anyway I had an absolute blast and am most grateful to Renaud & Cartier as the tickets are normally $95 each!!! We had fantastic seats.
